What Story Crayon does

Story Crayon lets a parent or guardian turn a photo of a child's drawing — or of the child — into a storybook character, then generates illustrated reading-practice stories, narration, and lesson plans for that character. It is designed for children under 13, so the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) applies, and this app was built around it.

The photo you upload is never stored

The uploaded photo exists in the server's memory only long enough for our AI provider to write a short, non-biometric text description of the character (hair color, clothing, mood, art style). The photo is never written to disk, saved in our database, or placed in file storage, and we do not create or store any facial recognition data. Only the text description and the AI-generated illustrations are kept.

What we collect and keep

• From the parent: your email address, stored only as a cryptographic hash (we cannot read it back), plus a record of your consent (timestamp and version).
• About the child: first name, age, and reading level progress. Children cannot create accounts themselves — everything belongs to the parent's account.
• Generated content: the character description, stories, illustrations, narration audio, and lesson plans created for your character.

Who processes the content

To generate stories we send content to three service providers, named in the consent form: Anthropic (analyzes the photo and writes story text), Black Forest Labs (generates illustrations), and Cartesia (generates narration audio). We do not sell or share personal information with anyone else, and there is no advertising or tracking in this app.

Consent, revocation, and deletion

Uploading requires prior parental consent, confirmed by email. You can revoke consent at any time from within the app; revocation immediately and permanently deletes your family's entire footprint — profiles, consent records, characters, stories, illustrations, and audio.
